Instagramming NYC & Miami

Sometimes good things come out of bad things. Losing my dearest Grandfather earlier this year was a heart break. But, he left me enough money to take myself off on a much needed, probably well deserved and long awaited holiday; thank you Gramps. So in honour of his memory, I headed off to one of my most favourite cities in the World, NYC and had an absolute whirl! Having our shop means that James and I rarely get away together, a real pain, but, I have a bunch of friends stateside, most particularly my favourite, Kristin, and so I went to visit friends and get away from it all for a couple of weeks. Yay. One of the best holidays ever.

Kristin lives in Brooklyn, I adore it there, so different from the choas of Manhattan, I also love it there but I spent the bulk of my time exploring Brooklyn. Kristin had a work trip to Miami while I was there (it cleverly overlapped with my visit) so I got to be an extremely lucky girl and tag along on her business class trip there for a few days….pheweeeee, I have never seen such luxury, or heat, amazing.

Then a couple more days in NYC before heading home. A superb time, good friends, amazing weather, fun adventures and lots of head space from real life. I took heaps of photos so there is a whole bunch of blog posts on their way, but for now, if you don’t follow me on Instagram (why ever not it’s so much fun there) then here are a few highlights of my beautiful holiday. x

Springtime is on the way

the prim girlYeeep-yeep! The first few peekaboo signs that spring is coming have made me a happy girl. Happy enough that I managed to get out into a patch of sun to shoot my new dress. Not quite ready to break out the summery colours yet but, twas indeed a treat to get the sun on my skin and see a few flowers showing the top of their heads in the soil!

Edinburgh to say Goodbye

Earthy

Last week we headed up to Edinburgh for a family farewell. My very dear Grandfather passed away at the good ole’ age of 90 and we made sure to give him a great send off. The most polite, smartly dressed and charming man I have ever known, he was a pure honour to have as a Gramps. Always with long stories to tell and a bigger social circle than many people half his age, Bobby Simpson was just brilliant. I shall endeavour to pay tribute with a blog post dedicated just to him. But for now I have to adjust to the fact that he is no longer here.

I absolutely adore Edinburgh, having visited it often all my life to see family, it is a city that has totally captured my heart. Such a damn handsome place and with a great sense of vitality, I just kinda wish it wasn’t so cold and gusty there! James and I stayed in a cute apartment and explored the cobbled streets together, which was just ace seeing as we never get time off together. We ate breakfast both days in Earthy which I love and the food was heavenly. We also popped to the glorious Harvey Nichols for a peek and to stock up on my Chanel make-up.

Edinburgh, a grand city indeed; a perfect place to say farewell to my Gramps.

The Things I Work With

Things I work with

I’m a lucky girl. Lucky because I get to work with and be surrounded by things that I love. Running my vintage fashion shop is a pretty great way to earn my pounds, but the actual shop is just a small portion of what goes into selling clothes. James is pretty much the salesman, he runs the shop most days, and very good he is at it too, he simply excels. I am behind the scenes, and there sure is a whole heap of stuff behind there. My role is to source the stock and then prepare it for the store. Prepping generally involves me being at home, out at the back of our house we have a garage which has been converted into my work space, it’s pretty cold in there but I have everything I need and my cats can visit all day long too, super! I take each item and wash it, whether it be by hand or in the machine and then I steam and iron it and do any fixings and repairs that it may need, making sure it’s in a tip-top shape for being sold. Each and every day I fall in love with an item, most usually a dress. I become amazed at the beauty of it and the detail it contains. I adore looking at old hand stitched seams, explicit tailoring, intricate detail and embroidery that would have taken a whole heap of love to create, it fascinates me all of the time.

My weeks are full and I love that fact. I do sourcing and prep work a few days a week, other days I blog, do admin, go to London, meet friends, oh and a couple of days a week I get myself to the shop to merchandise, clean and tidy and be the most sales-girly I can be. Running Prim involves more work than I have ever known and the stress of owning a shop can grind a girl down, but, in my heart I know that I would take this over an office job any day.
