Over-The-Counter Medication You Wanna Know About

Health and wellbeing, it’s probably the most important part of life, right? Do you know about all the different medication that is available to you without a prescription from your doctor? It’s kinda important that you do, for a number of reasons. Maybe you are looking to fill up your medicine cupboard and first aid kit with the necessary tablets and pills? Maybe you’re looking for a cure to a persistent health condition? Before you book to see the doctor, you should visit your local pharmacy instead. There is a lot of medicine available for you to try first. Then you can book an appointment with your doctor if the over the counter medication doesn’t seem to do the trick.

So next time you are looking for a certain medication or just need to top up your medicine cabinet, head down to your nearest pharmacy, the pharmacist will be very happy to talk to you about the following common medicines.

Painkillers – There are a number of different painkillers on offer from the good ole’ NHS. However, some of the strongest ones can only be given to patients with a prescription from their doctor. But there are still plenty available if you just need a quick remedy for a headache, period, or back pain. Paracetamol is one of the most common over the counter painkillers, it can help relieve a variety of pains as well as cold and flu symptoms which we all dread at this time of year. The majority of people can safely take this medication without worrying about side effects. Another common over the counter painkiller is ibuprofen. This medication has the added bonus of being an anti-inflammatory. So is often used for sports injuries and other forms of inflammation.

Cough Medicine – As with painkillers, there is also a good choice of over the counter cough medicine. One thing to remember, though, is that most cough medication from the pharmacy won’t be suitable for children under two years old. If you do have a young child who is suffering from a cough, you will need to take him or her to the doctor straight away. However, if you’re the one who is suffering, there’s plenty of solutions in your local drug store. When you’re looking in your pharmacy, you’ll see an excellent choice of cough medication. There will be syrups aimed at combating different types of cough. So whether you have a tickly cough or are *eeeew* coughing up mucus, you’ll certainly find a remedy!

Diarrhoea – Diarrhoea isn’t very pleasant at all is it, bleugh. But the good news is that it should clear up naturally after a few days if it is due to an upset tummy. However, you may still want to do something to try and curb the symptoms. And, there is a great solution waiting for you down at the pharmacy. You can buy Imodium over the counter at all drug stores. You may even find this common diarrhoea remedy in your supermarket! The drug works by bunging you up, so you won’t have to go to the toilet quite so much, handy if you’re at work or play while your stomach is unsettled!

Contraceptive – There are also some contraception solutions that are available over the counter. One of these is the morning after pill. This comes in useful if you ever go too far on a date and end up having unprotected sex, not advisable obvs, but we all gotta know that accidents can happen. There is one difference to purchasing the morning after pill to other over the counter tablets, though. Firstly, you will have to speak directly to a pharmacist before you can buy it. And you will have to take it in front of the pharmacist. If you do need the morning after pill, it is important that you get it within twenty-four hours of having unprotected sex. This is because its effectiveness is reduced after this time. You can also buy certain contraceptive pills from the pharmacy. For instance, you can purchase cerazette from a registered online pharmacy to keep you safe from any mistakes…although OBVIOUSLY being safe from STD’s is always a priority too!

Sleep Remedies – I  love my sleep, and if I don’t get enough then I’m a wreck. There are lots of sleep remedies in pharmacies as well. Some can help you drop off while others claim to improve the quality of your sleep. Does your boyfriend keep you awake all night with his snoring? Then you will be happy to hear that there are things you can buy to put an end to all the snoring! But most over the counter sleep remedies help to calm you down to make it easier to fall asleep. You can find this type of medication in the form of tablets or syrups. You will also be able to buy some sleep remedies that are based on aromatherapy which I was prefer. These usually come in the form of essential oils. All you will need to do is to put a couple of drops on your pillow before you go to bed. The calming scents will help your mind switch off, I like to take some A Vogel’s Dormeasan, which has hops and that reeeeally helps me sleep well.

Allergy Medications – Do you suffer from hay fever or other mild allergies? Annoying huh? You don’t need to go to your doctor straight away if you think you are suffering from such an allergy. You can simply pop into your pharmacy and have a chat with your pharmacist about your options. Unfortunately, the pharmacist won’t be able to prescribe you an epipen though, if your allergy is more than a mild one, you should visit your doctor. But for a mild allergy, seeing your pharmacist is enough. They will give you some antihistamine tablets which will help to keep all your symptoms at bay. Yay.

Upset Stomach – Are you being plagued by a stomach ache? There is no reason why you should suffer; you will find plenty of medication in your local drug store. You will find plenty of medication that can help find digestive problems. For example, you can buy peppermint oil which can massively help to relieve the symptoms of IBS. If you ever overindulge at dinner, you can always nip out to your pharmacy and invest in some Gaviscon or Rennies too!

So, y’see, there is plenty that you can pick up at your pharmacist. And all without going to the trouble of getting a prescription from your doctor! Take care of YOU!
